Dr Hensiek graduated from the University in Duesseldorf, Germany but conducted her clinical training as a medical doctor in the UK. Her junior doctor training in general medicine was completed in Scotland and London where Dr Hensiek also passed the membership exams of the Royal College of Physicians. Dr Hensiek then trained in Neurology for a period of seven years at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.
Current Practice
Dr Hensiek was appointed as Neurology consultant at Addenbrokes Hoptial Cambridge, Papworth Hospital Cambridge and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn in 2008. Her current post involves assessing patients on an outpatient and inpatient basis, as well as acute neurology patients at Addenbrookes Hospital.
Dr Hensiek manages patients with all common and rare neurological disorders, including conducting the motor neuron disease clinic in Kings Lynn. Whilst the majority of her work involves general neurology, Dr Hensiek has a subspecialty interest in hereditary neurological disorders. Dr Hensiek conducts specialized neurogenetics clinics in Cambridge, including clinics on hereditary spastic paraparesis, ataxia and tuberous sclerosis.
Furthermore, she is the neurology lead of the Cambridge national clinics for the Neurofibromatosis type 2 and ataxia teleangiectasia and contributes to the development for assessment protocols and clinical studies into these disorders. Dr Hensiek is an educational supervisor for the neurology trainees in Cambridge and regularly participates in teaching of junior doctors and medical students.
Academic Background
Dr Hensiek has experience in organising and conducting both clinical and basic research. She obtained the academic title ‘Dr med’ for completing a neurological study on HIV-patients in Germany.
In the UK, Dr Hensiek was successful in obtaining a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship to work on the genetics of multiple sclerosis at the University of Cambridge. She was awarded a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2004 for this work.
Since completing her period of full-time research, she has continued to be involved in clinical research, which enhances and complements her work as a clinical neurologist. This includes being a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Ataxia Telangiectasia society as well as supervising PhD students and participating in clinical research and trials relating particularly to her special areas of interest. Dr Hensiek has published more than thirty articles on various neurological subjects and co-authored several book chapters.
Dr Hensiek is also an affiliated associate Professor for the University of Cambridge.
